UK don"t take terrorism seriously
by Nina Gotzmannova

United Kingdom doesn't take the problem of terrorism seriously enough. Or that is the result of the words of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah. He spoke in an interview with the BBC on Monday and revealed some interesting information and opinions. He also hinted that UK had information about the terroristic attack in 2005 but the government just didn't care. According to King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia sent information about potential terrorist attacks. To their surprise no action was taken and the London metro was hit by dangerous invaders. King Abdullah directly accused government of failing to protect the country and the world against terrorism. He also believes that the information provided by Saudi Arabia was so relevant that the attack in 2005 shouldn't happen. But the opposite side says something else. The report from Intelligence and Security Committee in May 2006 said that the information from Saudi Arabia was not essential. The reason is that the data was simply not detailed enough to use it. It was too general and British security forces received lot of similar information that time. They didn't investigate anything from the Saudi source, because it was so general. King Abdullah of course denied that his info was not relevant and blames Great Britain and other large countries of not handling the danger of terrorism properly. Maybe he is right and world is still deaf, blind and dumb to this risks. Or maybe he is wrong and the world is taking enough care. But why still are so many religious and absurd deadly attacks all over the world?

Hard to calculate, hard to count.
by Barbie Kunkelova

The UK government messed up. Tit has no idea who is entering the country, who stays and who leaves. Currently 200,000 more people move into UK to stay than leave each year. Such large figure and yet it screwed up by more. After announcing that the amount of immigrants to UK increased by 800,000 during the past 10 years, it fell short off the real figure by 300,000 & it was 1.1 million. Later on it apologized for its mistake publicly; the Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain announced the new result basically during Tory leader David Cameron's speech on immigration (on October 30). Here Cameron said immigration makes it difficult for the government to deliver its visions of opportunity, responsibility and security. He disagreed with Gordon Brown's (the Prime Minister's) views and thinks that Brown can not handle the immigration problem properly. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, the UK's population will rise by 11 million (to 71 million) by 2031, on current trends. That might cause higher pressure for the citizens; problems with housing, education, transportation system, energy and water supplies and healthcare. Cameron also reminded of the increasing single-person household problem. The trends of divorcing, family break-ups and later marriage spread from the US all the way to the UK and are along with ageing a serious threat for the society. He votes for enforcing the Border Police & for controlling the people crossing the UK border more precisely plus tracking and removing the immigrants. But the UK leaders should not be surprised by the amount of people wanting to "move in", that is only one of the amazing results an advanced, open economy brings along. Mr. Cameron might come up with a complete vision of UK visa pretty soon.

Parents of missing Maddie deny using sedatives
by Nina Gotzmannova

Three year old British girl Maddie McCann is still missing. Since her disappearing in Portugal in May, the police, in spite of world spread media coverage, wasn't able to find this blonde daughter of two English doctors. They were desperate seeking in Portugal, Spain and North Africa, they had the support of many British celebrities, and finally in September they become suspects. On Wednesday, Gerry and Kate McCann appeared in Spanish TV in the first television interview since September. The Portugal police have a theory about Maddie. They anticipate that Gerry and Kate McCann gave Maddie sedatives to calm her down, because they wanted to go to a restaurant nearby. They left her dazzled in their apartment with her two younger siblings, but when they came back, horrified realized, that the girl is dead. They panicked and disposed her body, saying their daughter is missing and pretending they are innocent. Maddie's parents strictly denied this accusing. They say they are innocent and all the theory about drugging their daughter is "outrageous". In the interview the parents also said they still believe their daughter is alive, not dead as the officials are assuming, and they hope the abductor will return her home. The saddest thing about this case is that missing Maddie is only one of thousands kids that disappeared every day. Every year disappears 797,500 children in United States only. Maddie is a small drop in a sea full of missing daughters, sons, cousins and grandchildren. The media coverage didn't help finding her, but there are thousands of anonymous kids the world doesn't care about. And the question is, why?

British consumers can live without mortgages
by Corina Ciubotaru

The global credit crunch is starting to show its many results and one of them is that consumers now take much less credit than before. Banks and other lenders have toughened their conditions for issuing a loan and this came as a shock for the consumers, whose lack of liquidities is what caused this mayhem in the first place. Effects of the credit crisis appeared all over the world but they were most felt in the U.S. and the U.K. where lending is still being done with great caution. Personal loan rates have increased by 4 percent and over 60 mortgage applications have been rejected last month, but consumers are starting to repay some of their debts and all signs point to a recovery in 2008. In the UK, most debts are in London, followed by Liverpool and Birmingham and some consider them to be mainly due to Brits impossibility to save money and their reliance on credits because of the high cost of living. Some good news for homeowners is that interest rates will go down next year, contrary to some expectations, and reach 6 percent. The Bank of England raised the rates to a six-year high of 5.75 percent and it made consumers take care of things like bills and savings, instead of borrowing. But even though they naturally adapt to changes in the market, regular consumers don't actually understand what is happening to the British economy. A recent study showed that 70 percent of Brits lack even the basic understanding of things like interest rates.

A 28 billion pound fraud
by Claudia Sonea

Well it's nothing new that there are people that try to con other people in exchange of earning easy and quick money, but this time the forgers went overboard. Six defendants from Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Australia had tried to con the Bank of England and steal 28 billion pounds with badly made fake notes. Everything started in December last year when, Ross Cowie, an Australian lawyer who sent an email to the bank saying he represents six ancient members of a pre-communist Chinese clan. He was interested if the clan's 500000 pound notes could be changed in smaller notes. Furthermore the gang of counterfeiters tried to use a bunch of 1000 pound notes, out of circulation since 1943; except 63 notes everything was gathered back by the bank. London's Southwark Crown Court and the jury made out of eight men and four women found out that the 360 notes of 500000 pounds have never existed. Prosecutor Martin Evans stated that if the notes have been indeed authentic, they would worth three quarters of the 39 billion pounds that are used around the world nowadays. However, the notes were even badly counterfeited, because the Bank of England chief cashier from 1963, Sir Jasper Quintus Hollam always used his first two initials when signing his name, while the forged notes had only the second. Chin Daniel Lim, a 50 years old man from Malaysia, Kim Ming Teo, 41, Ping Shuen Mak and Chi Kuen Chung, 53, from Hong Kong, also Kwok Kwong Chan, 55, from China are the five other counterfeiters. They all live in London area and deny the accusations. The trial will last at least six weeks. Obviously the bank had the smart idea of alluring the Australian lawyer in telling that they want to check the special notes and sent at the meeting an undercover officer. There you have it. Don't try to con a national bank or at least don't be greedy or you might get the attention on you. Good luck to the forgers and keep some really cash for the prison (in)mates.

UK relations with EU are still not clear
by Nina Gotzmannova

United Kingdom is not the only monarchy in European Union. But relations this island with EU are very special. They are members of EU since 1973 and play a leading role in EU, but still didn't accept Euro. United Kingdom and Ireland didn't open their borders under the Schengen Agreement and tourist, visitors and businesspeople still need regular visa if they want to come into the country. The polls in UK showed people would like to have a referendum on a new EU contract reforming the EU instituions. The poll was published in Financial Times on Thursday and full 75 percent of those who vote agreed with the referendum. Another poll resulted 69 percent, what is still high. But one of the pollsters, Peter Kellner, told the truth. Maybe the numbers seems high, in fact nobody cares. Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are quite isolated. As a insular nation they mostly care about their local politics and are just careless to all what happens behind the sea. They are sceptical to everything that's not British and the EU is among them. According to Kellner's words Europe is very low on the list of people's priorities. All the hue is made only by British politicians. For example, the Conservative Party tore itself apart in the 1990s because of EU, and now they also called for a referendum. But British Prime Minister probably dissapointed them, he said a strict ‘no' to the idea of a referendum saying the treaty is not a constitution and therefore no reason for people to decide whether they want it or not. He also added that their taxes and foreign policy, the two most precious things for British politicians, will remain unchanged. So no referendum and the Britons can stay in their lethargy and carelessness forever.

Like a lion bin London.
by Barbie Kunkelova

According to Times Online, Atilla Ahmet and Osama bin London (Mohammed Hamid) are the names of two Islamic men who were recruiting, grooming and corrupting Muslim men and for this reason taking them to weekend camps in New Forest, UK - in order to train them, to prepare them for future attacks (BBC). One of the exercises was to commit murder, four of those trainees participated in the killing in the vehicles of London bus transportation (those were Mousa Brown, Kibley da Costa, Mohammed Al-Figari and Kader Ahmed & Kader is only 20 years old!). Mr. Hamid is famous for his statement "That's not even breakfast for me" where "that" meant 52 innocent deaths (today that act is reffered to as Terrorism Act 2006) and for praising the 9-11 attackers! As Telegraph states, few months later, on October 12, Hamid was heard in front of the Paddington Green high security station, returning from the weekend camp, yelling his lungs out: "Here is your terrorist, I'm right here, come and get me!" The five men mentioned above are now on trial, but they all deny the charges. Suddenly none of them ever provided weapons, attended terrorist training, possessed any kind of terrorist information, solicited murder or possessed terrorist documents. Atilla Ahmet has pleaded guilty to three counts of soliciting murder, so he is not on trial. On Thursday October 18, three of the men on trial were filmed during a paintball session for BBC's "Don't Panic, I'm Islamic" program. The prosecutor, David Farrell, joked in front of the jurors after showing them a short clip of the training: "It does not look like religious instructions, does it?"

Conservative David Cameron's attacks on PM Brown continue
by Corina Ciubotaru

Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown is facing harsh criticism these days. Conservative leader David Cameron is accusing him of delaying the elections due to fears of loss and is questioning his abilities as a politician. Recently, the attacks got even worse when Cameron became aggressively ironic and left Brown little means to defend himself in front of his colleagues in Parliament, and the PM faces other busy and difficult days in the following week. An E.U. summit is approaching fast so he went to meet Jose Manuel Barroso, the head of the European Commission. In the following days, Mr. Brown will also have to decide on the budget for health which is going to be increased next year. Gordon Brown has been Britain's PM since June, but many analysts were expecting him in 10 Downing Street a lot sooner. He had a history of both friendship and rivalry with the former Prime Minister and he was the country's longest serving chancellor so the seat he now occupies must seem like a well-deserved prize for his life's work. His party had been doing very well in polls partly due to his good handling of national issues like an epidemic that was barely avoided and massive floods; the Conservatives began to rise a few days ago and this is also when the critics started speaking louder. He seems a man totally dedicated to politics, fun with friend but somewhat awkward around strangers but despite not being very charismatic, he eventually gained Tony Blair's support when he started his leadership campaign.

Gordon Brown"s Party second, shows newest poll
by Nina Gotzmannova

Who has birthday on the same day as Kurt Cobain and Cindy Crawford? If you said Ivana Trump and Gloria Vanderbilt, you were right. But one of the most powerful man in the world celebrates on this special day too. His name is Gordon Brown, he is Prime Minister of United Kingdom and recently wearing his head low. The polls showed his party is not the most popular one in the country. The Ipsos Mori poll, done for one of the British newspapers, shows the truth. Ipsos Mori called more than 1,000 people to ask them about their political opinion. Only 11 percent is supporting Liberal Democrats. Exactly 38 % is for Labourists, Brown's party and three percents more, 41%, is voting for Tories and Conservatives. Gordon Brown probably has to try harder. He promised to beat corruption, maybe introduce a new ministerial code to set borders for ministers how to behave, built up to 100,000 new homes and improve health care. All this steps may lead to higher preferences in the polls, but only if done correctly and fast. But at first he has to switch to a more ecological car, a promise he had made, but not fulfilled. Even his family life is not gaining him more popularity. Almost "newlywed", only seven years married man has two kids, but his wife wishes to remain hidden. She is not much public person, as former "fist wife" Cherie Blair was, so she is not helping Brown with publicity affairs. But since the general elections are at least a year away, Brown and Labour Party have plenty of time to improve their ratings in public.

Diana's death investigated
by Claudia Sonea

On 31 August 1997 due to a tragic accident caused allegedly by the fact that Henri Paul, Acting Security Manager of the Hôtel Ritz Paris, was driving under the influence of alcohol, all the British people were mourning the loss of their Princess of Hearts. Diana Frances, born Spencer, married the heir of the throne prince Charles of Wales with whom she had two children, William and Henry. That led to the loss of anonymity and entrance in the people's attention who were fascinated with her royal status. Even after the divorce, most of the people sympathized with her, mostly because her charity works. She remained in media's attention who was constantly on her tracks and that eventually led to her tragic ending. In the night of the tragic event she was at the Ritz Hotel together with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed, 42 years old, son of Mohamed Al-Fayed, the multimillionaire who owns the Hotel. Together with Henri Paul and Trevor Rees-Jones, Dodi's bodyguard, they tried to escape the paparazzi, therefore engaged in a high speed car, in the Pont d'Alma road tunnel in Paris the car, a '94 black Mercedes-Benz S280, crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel. It is absolutely inhuman how the paparazzi were more interested to take photos of the accident than the people who were trapped in the car. The only survivor was the bodyguard sitting on the passenger seat, Dodi and Henri died instantly, while Diana suffered massive damage to her heart and subsequent internal bleeding. Despite the efforts to resuscitate her, the Princess of Hearts died on the ambulance to the Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière. In London a jury was formed in order to establish if the death was an accident and on Monday and Tuesday they will trace back the last day of the couple. Lord Justice Scott Baker, knowing how the event will attract media's attention, urged for the eleven jurors (six women and five men) to be left alone, because they are already under a lot of pressure due to their responsibility. Both French and British police after careful investigation concluded that it was caused by the chauffer who was found to have a three times more amount of alcohol in his blood, than the legal limit. However, Mohamed accused the British security of killing them and reasoned with the fact that Princess' marriage with a Muslim would not be appropriate for the Royal House. Stay close there are more to come on this. Until then let's keep a moment of silence in the honor of a woman who proved that we all are human beings beyond social status. She was the first celebrity touching a child with HIV. She dedicated her life to her children and to all the causes in the world. She really made a difference.

Gordon Brown will send his troops back home
by Nina Gotzmannova

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown admitted to the reporters his weekend was tough. But for the demonstrationists outside Westminster demanding the end of the war in Iraq and for the families of 5,000 soldiers in Iraq it was not so. Brown finally confirmed that the number of British troops will be reduced at least of half. The happy moment will come in spring 2008. The remaining soldiers will also have something else to do. Instead of fighting and shooting they will change their presence to an ‘audience'. Their role will be just monitor, watch and supervise. The Iraqis who worked with British forces for more over a year will also have some benefits when this change will come. They may receive a permission to move to Britain or financial support to move within Iraq. If they fulfill several conditions their hard work will be rewarded. Brown also revealed some facts about the on-coming elections. They must be held before June 2010 but there are some rumors the elections will be this autumn or in 2008. The Prime Minister said they are not likely to be in 2008, but denied to set a date in 2009. He redeemed it quite simply, he just need more time. He wants to set out his views on health, housing, education and more. He also added he is taking full responsibility for not to call an early election. The opinion polls are not much positive and he is accused on being scared on possible defeat.
