United Kingdom has 225 nuclear warheads
by Zuzana Zelenakova

British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced Wednesday that Britain has a maximum number of 225 nuclear warheads, of which 160 are “operationally available.” "We believe that the time is now right to be more open about the weapons we hold," Hague said in a statement to Parliament. "We judge that this will assist in building a climate of trust between nuclear and non-nuclear weapons states and contribute, therefore, to future efforts to reduce the number of nuclear weapons worldwide." In an attempt to pursue more open and transparent nuclear policy Britain followed the example of the United States. Last month, US President Barack Obama signed the Strategic! Arms Reduction Treaty together with the Russian head of state Dmitry Medvedev during the summit in Prague, which is one of the steps widely interpreted as leading to downgrading the importance of nuclear weapons in US foreign policy. Also, a new Nuclear Posture Review was released in the US stating that the country will not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states. However, the US authorities were quick to assure everybody that this move would not weaken the country in any way. "I think if you actually read the nuclear posture review, you would make three conclusions. First - we intend to maintain a robust nuclear deterrent. Let no one be mistaken. The United States will defend ourselves, and defend our partners and allies. We intend to sustain that nuclear deterrent by modernizing the existing stockpile. In fact, we have $5 billion in this year's budget going into that very purpose," said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. When it comes to Britain, there is ! still a decision to be made about whether new warheads would b! e develo ped. The US already excluded the possibility and it also announced it had in its stockpile 5,113 warheads.

Veľká Británia zverejnila rozsah svojho jadrového arzenálu
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The Opening of the Parliament in UK
by Claudia Sonea

David Cameron shows the world that he means business. After less than one month since he was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, he already had the first cabinet meeting and managed to sort out difference between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats that form Britain's first coalition government since 1945. UK Prime Minister and the coalition proved their seriousness about reforming the country by cutting from their own pay 5%. Most people would say that it is not much from a salary of 140,000 pounds ($206,800), but it is a start. In no other country, politicians cut their pays; in fact th! ey actually cut from the salary of the poor and from the already small pensions (see Romania). The 5% cut is part of the plan to reduce the 163 billion pound budget deficit and boost the country’s economy. At the opening of the Parliament, Queen Elizabeth through her speech uttered some of the measures that will be taken by the new coalition. Among the measures were five-year terms for parliaments, a referendum on changes to the voting system, capping non-EU immigration, giving Bank of England more control of regulation and oversight, holding a referendum before transferring more powers to Brussels, and money others. Some hailed the new program, some criticized it harshly. Nonetheless, the coalition led by Cameron is going further with its plans that received great support from the media and the public. Whether British the Prime Minister and the new measures will have success remains to be seen in the! days that come. Good luck and long live the Queen!

More disruptions for passengers as BA cabin crew begins strike
by Zuzana Zelenakova

British Airways cabin crew began five day strike Monday. Air traffic that has been severely disrupted by the ash cloud from Icelandic volcano continues to be unstable. Despite the strike British Airways operates about 60 percent of long-haul flights from Heathrow airport and 50 percent of short-haul flights, as the company informed. Gatwick and London City Airports operate all flights. The strike began after the talks between BA and the Unite union failed during the weekend. The dispute is over wages and working conditions. The latest talks, however, revealed some cracks within the Unite that represents almost all of 15,000 cabin crew members. It turned out that one of the! Joint General Secretaries of the Unite, Derek Simpson, was sending messages to the social network site Twitter right during the talks with BA on Saturday. As a result, protesters from the Socialist Workers Party arrived at the spot causing a fuss and as Joint-General Secretary Tony Woodley said the incident ruined the possibility of any kind of deal on Saturday. “He was sitting opposite me and he did have his Blackberry out, I thought he was responding to an email or a text message but when I found out that he was actually sending his version of events to the wider audience that really did undermine my confidence in their desire to resolve the issue,” said angry BA´s chief executive Willie Walsh. As Tony Woodley said the Unite would call off the strike if the airline leadership agreed on restoring travel perks for the staff that took part in the March strike. Further strikes are scheduled to begin on 30 May and 5 June. The BA also said it has leased about ! eight planes with pilots and crew from other European airline ! companie s.

Cameron starts the diplomacy action
by Zivka Deleva

Paris and Berlin are going to be the first foreign destinations for Great Britain’s new Prime Minister David Cameron. Just one week ago, the new leader of the country took the Prime Minister position, as a leader of the centre-right Conservative party. It is a coincidence that France and Germany are the first countries Cameron insisted on visiting. Especially the last decade, British Conservatives didn’t want a close friendship with the European Union, including the most active countries in them. But, Cameron seems a little bit different than his fellowship and knows that as a new man of such a big world’s force, must have good relationship with the other ! “fig fish in the sea”. The diplomacy has its rules. You can freely say that Cameron hadn’t even entered his new office, and the U.S President Barack Obama had already invited him on a visit. Tomorrow Cameron will meet Nicolas Sarkozy and the day after tomorrow, he will have a coffee with Andrea Merkel. The meeting with the most powerful German lady will be on few important issues like the global economy situation, the EU worst problems and the climate change, as well. In Berlin, Cameron will be welcomed with military honors. One of the first quarrel that Britain has already had had these days, when EU finance ministers were rigid about the question of the money help and want bigger control over hedge funds. The thing is, Britain is one of the biggest founders of these funds. But in this battle, the Brits were defeated. Cameron’s party is the same type as Merkel’s and Sarkozy’s and we should assume that he will have a common language with! his colleagues. It’s a good time to make some new frien! ds, don& #8217;t you think, Prime Minister?

Brothers "fighting"?
by Barbora Misakova

Well, politics offers quite a big field for dialogues and discussion and also any other kind of rivalry. But fight between two different and foreign people is more understandable for me than between two brothers. Names I have never heard before has become popular just because of their mutual competition in politics. Brothers and former cabinet ministers Ed and David Miliband (or is it Miniband?) announced they will compete against each other for the leadership of Britain’s Labour party. Ed, the younger one seems to be so sure about this step and sees no problem in it. As he informed: “I have talked to my family (did he talk to his brother too?) and friends and I! have decided to stand to be leader of the Labour Party.” As a proper politician he didn’t forget to speak to people and to the party when he said: “We will learn from our mistakes, we will be part of your values again, we will be part of your community again and we will work with you to build the kind of country we want to see. And my message to our party is this: We have to use this leadership campaign as a first step on the road back to power because that is where we should be as a political party.” It is hard to say if Ed’s desire to become leader of the centre-left party is his real dream or is it just an effort how not to serve under his elder brother another next few years. The truth is that bookmakers make David Miliband the odds-on favorite to become the leader.

UK got the youngest Prime Minister ever
by Zivka Deleva

Great Britain has a new Prime Minister. People's favorite during the last campaign, the leader of the Conservatives, David Cameron is taking over the helm island Kingdom. His predecessor Mr. Gordon Brown resigned after the fiasco results on the parliamentary elections last week. It is good when a politician is self-critical and decides to apologize to its voters and make one step backward and not hit the wall with his head. That' how I would characterize Brown's decision, after 13 years of leadership in the United Kingdom. In the general election last week, Cameron's party won the majority in the Parliament, but still that wasn't enough for to take over the whole reign , kn! own as Commons majority. Cameron's deputy is going to be the leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg. These days are historical for many reasons for the Brits. First, after 70 years, the government is going to be a coalition in the country. The second, historical fact is that with its 43 years, David Cameron is the youngest prime minister in almost 200 years. OK, as every politician when comes on the most wanted seat, promises equality among the parties and to fight for the "national interest", so did Cameron promised the same. He has been leader of the Conservatives since 2005. People are suspicious about the coalition thing, but Craigg is trying to keep their confidence and make them believe that everything will be alright. "I hope this is the start of the new politics I have always believed in - diverse, plural, where politicians of different persuasions come together, overcome their differences in order to deliver good government for the sake of the whole country" -! said Craigg. Let's hope that this decision is not going to hu! rt the p eople of Great Britain a lot.

Brown to step aside, Clegg to shape future government.
by Milota Sidorova

British politic scene is turbulent these days. After election with no clear winner, the talks of making coalition are the daily bread here. Queen Elisabeth is going to wait with her New-Prime Minister welcome ceremonies, nothing has been decided. But so far, the talks about making so called grand coalition consisting from winning Conservatives and the Labour party have failed. It seems that the political scene is mad for one man.Nick Clegg, the leader of Liberal Democrats. After his hopeful pre-election performance and folliwing failure, he was still able to get over 40 seats in the Parliament. That made him man no.3 and wanted coalition partner. During the weekend, we have ! heard Cameron, the leader of Coservative party has started the dialogue with Liberals. The other alternative in British political systeme was up to current Prime Minister to form coalition of minority government.Gordon Brown, the leader of current Labour party that ended up after Conservatives, has clearly understood this message and announced he was prepared to step aside from his place just to assure the chance for Labour party to create the coalition. He also surprised the public when he said Clegg was in the dialogue with Labours as well as with Conservatives. The situation is now bit complicated. Clegg signed that he wouldn't keep Brown in the office and wouldn't make him his coalition partner. Now, after announcement, Liberals are getting another point of view and space to manipulate.Still Brown didn't exactly specify his resignation, but said it could come after Labour annual meeting which is in September.

It is so easy now!
by Barbora Misakova

There are many things that “fascinate” me in politics. Many of them I have already mentioned. For example so called political honesty, making promises that will never be fulfilled, and constant threat of losing voters and supporters that all lead to creation of something what I call “pure politician” – liar desperately longing for power. Of course not every politician is a liar, just like not every blond is stupid, but those whose have already tasted power are liars, at least a bit. Now, when Thursday’s UK general elections resulted in a hung parliament where no party has overall majority, I just have to laugh. Liberal Democrats and Conse! rvatives have to lead power-sharing talks what is not as funny as the statement of Conservative negotiator William Hague who said Sunday that talks were very positive and productive. United Kingdom had quite serious problem with budget deficit few days ago, and now they seem to be solved? It’s ridiculous! They have met only once – for more than five hours, and they claim they have had “productive discussions over many key policy areas.”? In five hours they were able to discuss all topics that worried UK last days. Political reform, economic issues and the reduction of the deficit, banking reform, civil liberties, and environmental issues – all these so serious topic were discussed in few hours. Even though they plan to meet again within 24 hours to continue discussions, they have allegedly already agreed that “a central part of any agreement will be economic stability and a reduction of the budget deficit.” This leads me to another ! aspect of policy: when you are already in, any kind of decisio! n is sud denly so easy to make.

Problems, Problems
by Milota Sidorova

This was probably the most important day of British policital scene this year. There were a lot of signs they won't be usual. Pre-election polls made Conservatives the biggest favorits, although their victory would be veru tight. The second place would fall for Labour part and the third major party would be newcomers Liberal Democrats. The current situation however, underlined some projections while kicked the other.Let's add here some facts. For decades of years Queen Elisabeth would invite new Prime Minister for ceremonial breakfast on Friday monring. This is not the case this year. So far, nobody's sure who the Prime Minister is going to be. Top favorite leader of Conse! rvative party, Cameron, although leading the line is still missing the victory of major part in the Parliament. To win the elections and create the government, it means to win at least 326 seats. Conservatives are having around 270 seats, Labour party is having around 210 seats and the third favorit Clegg from Liberal Democrats surprised and failed to attract voters to get aroun 180 seats that he was supposed to get. His score is around 47 seats. That was the second surprise of the elections. But the organization failed yesterday – thousands of voters were rejected at the doors of the voting rooms. Election commisions were not ready to handle such interest and simply didn't have enough of voting papers, didn't have enough assistants, voting rooms and after 10:00 p.m. They simplt closed the doors in front of hundreds of voters waiting in the line. This is the biggest faux-pas of the elections. Many voters have already turned on lawyers and show their anger. But this pic! ture is poiniting sshadow of intransparency on usually well or! ganized British system. Some analysts suggest that not only because of voters, but if any of favorite leaders fails to make coalition, the election may repeat.

Gordon Brown believes in miracles
by Zivka Deleva

It is a human thing to make mistake but sublimely to forgive. It is more superhuman to admit that one has made a mistake. After few tries to avoid the responsibility of the things he had done, the actual Prime Minister of Great Britain Gordon Brown stated that he is going to be the one to be blamed if his party doesn't succeed to convince the British people that they are the best choice for the country in the next four years. The Labour Party governs the country for 13 years. All polls and statistics say that the Labour Party is going to lose its armchairs, because Conservatives invade with their campaign. Brown is still not convinced that all the battle is lost, because he! is convinced that the thousands of voters that still haven't made up their minds yet. He is going to try and win over them, as a blind man holds firmly his stick. The worst British Prime minister ever, that is how Brown is been named in the public. The fact that the Labourists have touched the ground is the last cry of the two ministers for the supporters to vote for the Liberal Democrats. Brown gave up of his tactics to defend his possible win, and ability to win over its people's votes, but realism hit his head. The leaders of the three biggest parties in the country spend their last days in the mission to persuade people to choose them. The Conservatives leader David Cameron seems to have the biggest chances to become the next British Prime Minister. He promoted his ideas as "campaign for change", and he is ready to fight for win. In 10 days everything will be known, all the dilemmas are going to flow away!

It is all about economy!
by Barbora Misakova

When you want my vote, you have to be careful what you say – this is probably like mass policy looks like, at least from perspective of politicians. Britain that has shortly before the polls has to face a massive budget deficit and questions in which spheres they could save bigger amount of money. None of the main parties have had courage to point and chose where the axe should fall so the truth will have to come out after the elections. Deficit projected to be 180 billion pounds by the end of this year is just too much and the question of spending cuts will have to be solved sooner or later. That’s why the suggestions where to save money should be put now, when! it’s still enough time to run away. But so far there is no party that would fully outlined exactly where the cuts will have to be done. According to deputy director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Carl Emmerson “people seem to think the cuts will be all about more efficiency and less waste”, but as he pointed out “the sums involved are far in excess of what efficiency measures alone could ever achieve.” It doesn’t matter who will be in government as the cuts will make people less well off and make public services less good. Labor Party, probably afraid of losing its power is promising “more than halve the deficit by 2014 through economic growth, fair taxes and cuts to lower-priority spending.” Well, well promises are here again, but how quickly will they disappear?
