Responsibility is not "in" anymore!?
by Barbora Misakova

The ecological disaster that affected the Gulf of Mexico concerns not only Americans but also many other people around the world, especially when gigantic corporations such as British Petroleum earn big money at the expense of our health and future. On Sunday, when the BBC reported that British Petroleum’s chief executive officer Tony Hayward was negotiating his terms of departure, even more negative voices has raised. As BBC reported, Hayward, whose future has been in doubt for several weeks, is likely to quit within 24 hours. During few last months, he was heavily criticized for his inadequate handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, which created the worst and ! the largest oil spill in history. But Hayward’s replacement by Bob Dudley came too late and many of his mistakes will probably never be repaired. Where is also question of responsibility? Shouldn’t he rather continue and does his best to reduce the damage he has done? It is hard to say as responsibility is not “in” anymore. What is more, Hayward is not going away empty-handed. He is asking for over one million pounds (1.5 million dollars) as severance package, which according to France 24 would be probably reduced to avoid controversy. But maybe more than controversy it is lack of money, that is threatening the company. That is why oil giant British Petroleum announced the sale of several major assets to US firm Apache for seven billion dollars. This money should help to pay the costs from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
