Chris Cantell Discusses UK News: Protesty v Londne

Medzi nosimi pochodne boli známe mená ako Kelly Holmes, Theo Walcott, Steve Redgrave, ktor zaal cel pochod zo tadióna vo Wembley, ale tie Vanessa Mae, Sugababes, Clive Woodward at. Kad jeden z nich vak musel by chránen políciou. A ja celkom rozumiem preo.

Chris Cantell Discusses UK News: Squirrels' competition
by Jana Kokavcova

Squirrel is a mammal that we know from some fairy tales. Nice , cute, funny. But what we really know about this fascinating animal. Do we know about competitions between grey and red squirrels? No. I don't think so. We really don't know a lot about this animal, how does their life looks like. It is maybe not so simple as we think. Red squirrels in United Kingdom are in danger. Why? Because of their cousins Grey squirrels. They are more powerful and not so weak and have better conditions for life. So they find mates, have small squirrels and are not so in danger as red squirrels. Red squirrels are really in danger. There are now only 40,000 red squirrels in Ireland. How can it be so? Ireland survives red squirrels. There are some special measurements to protect red squirrels. What could people do? They could help. But don't you think it is all about nature? Should we play a role of God? Could we? I know, it is too sad that one brand of squirrels is in better situation than the another, but..that is life. It is "law of jungle". And poor squirrels are a part of this law system. We can do what we want to do, but we can not find a right way how to escape before destiny of nature and before destiny of our world.

Blair on sale
by Claudia Sonea

It is of course a joke; the former Prime Minister is thinking to write his memoirs from the time he was at the country's charge. Although it comes as no surprise to anyone, the newspapers already are making a big fuss over the whole issue. Rumor has it that Robert Barnett, the famous lawyer who handled the contract of Bill Clinton for his memoirs, getting him a record deal of 12 million dollars. The ex-US President released his autobiography titled My Life and appointed the lawyer to take care of the financial aspect of talking with publishers on his behalf. A spokesman doing his duty as a diplomat stated that Blair is collaborating with the publisher to the creation of his biography- a smooth way of making public that an autobiography is on its way. However, the success of the book might be compromised by the fact that Alastair Campbell, former media chief of the Blair years, has already written a book about the Labour government. Also John Prescott is supposed to write a book. The former Prime Minister, presently Middle East peace envoy for the Quartet - the EU, US, UN and Russia, stepped down on June 27 with the sympathy of most of the British people, despite that in the last years a lot of them were against his attitude of following Bush in matters of foreign policy. Will his book get a similar contract as Bill Clinton's? Industry insiders say it will. Stay connected and find out how everything will turn out.

Chris Cantell Discusses UK News: Tornadoes scared England Nina Gotzmannova

On Monday saw the residents of central and southern England something they would never expect to come near their homes. A tornado. This unusual weather phenomenon ripped off several roofs, torn off branches from trees and in people of two British towns, Nuneaton and Farnborough, left an unforgettable feeling of something strange. A series of tornadoes arises during a big storm and destroyed everything on its way. Eyewitnesses said that the whole incident lasted only couple of minutes, but ripped off the roofs on more than 10 houses. Fortunately no one was injured. It wasn't the first incident in England this year. According to Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) there have been nine more accidents across the country, which may be tornadoes. They were witnessed for example in Warwickshire or Northamptonshire. Last year in December the residential area of northwestern London was hit by a tornado. Six people were injured and more than 100 houses were damaged. A tornado is a fast rotating column of air, which touches a cloud on one side and earth on the other. It usually has a shape like a column or a tube. Usually they occur in United States, but sometimes in Canada, Asia, Africa and Europe too. In England are tornadoes quite rare, according to TORRO there is about 33 tornadoes each year. Even though in England is the highest number of reported tornadoes per unit area in the world. The reason is that there live more people in a relatively small area and, of course, they pay more attention to the weather.

Brown maintaining security in South Iraq Zuzana Moravcova

As the British government outlined the first steps in a rethink of the war on terrorism in November, they decided to begin withdrawing their troops from Iraq.Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an unannounced visit to Basra in Iraq to mobilise troops and confirmed that Iraqi forces will take command of the last region under British control within two weeks. It was in accordance to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who recommends responsibility for security in southern Iraq to be handed over to local police and soldiers.Brown said they were able to move to provincial Iraqi control thanks to everything the soldiers had achieved.Britain believes there is going to be transition from a military mission in Iraq to one with a stronger economic component, aimed at bracing a country divided by war and years of neglect under Saddam Hussein. Earlier the Chancellor said it was crucial for Iraq to be seen to be 'running its own affairs' and offering £100m for economic reconstruction. Unemployment is supposed to be a factor in helping to recruit insurgents. In October, Tony Blair suggested that British forces could be home from Iraq within the next 12 to 18 months. "We have got to help the Iraqi economy get back on its feet so we can see Iraq running its own affairs, and we could see a reduction in troops over the next few months."A total of 173 members of British troops have died in Iraq since the invasion in March 2003.Due to the $12 billion annual price tag of operations in Iraq, Britain's participation in the invasion of Iraq led by U. S. and the ongoing presence of their troops is becoming strongly unpopular in Britain.

Quarrel about the nuclear energy
by Martina Harvanova

The quarrels about whether to build new nuclear power stations or not are a world-wide issue. The UK has recently said "yes" to the idea. Long-lasting questions about its pros and cons were solved, as the final decision apparently prefers advantages of nuclear energy. The whole "build-nuclear-plants" thing began to be discussed years ago among others also on the level of politics. The British Conservatives saw the nuclear power as a "last resort", on the other hand, the Liberal Democrats brought an accusation against them saying they "surrendered to the nuclear lobby". No matter what opinion they preferred, one thing is sure. The recent decree admitted its pluses. Most of the for-voices claim it is safe and secure, plus Britain won't rely on imports in the future. Nuclear power stations will contribute to decrease of carbon emissions which are deemed as one of the most harmful factors to Earth's atmosphere. Still, there are wind power stations, but, unfortunately, these aren't able to provide us with sufficient amount of energy. As some experts' remarks say, "a mix of energy is essential and we should not be over dependent on one source." However, the main reason for decision to dispose of more nuclear energy was meeting Britain's energy policy goals. The target is to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2050.The major opponent of the idea is probably Greenpeace movement. Their clauses recline in the opinion that nuclear power is irrelevant, because it only produces electricity, cut carbon emissions only in four per cent and therefore won't stop the climate change. Greenpeace stresses renewable sources f energy, such as wind, wave or tidal energy. Although it is hard to agree fully with either the first or the second view, the important thing is that the majority of public and world authorities conceives the pollution and is ready to improve the current environmental situation.

Sunday, a powerful blaze transformed to debris the Penhallow Hotel from Newquay, Cornwall.A 43 year old is believed that jumped from the second-floor after fire broke out Saturday at midnight.Almost eighty persons, mostly elderly, were evacuated from the hotel, but two are still recorded as missing. Four people are in the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and their condition is improving except for one of them, which is in a critical but stable condition.Police thinks that the two people missing, one of them believed that is related to the 43 year old man, are dead. We are trying to establish what happened and those images will be of vital importance."A team of 20 people are already searching through the hotel's ruble hoping to find some useful information that will lead to the cause of the fire.

Divorce rates in Britain haven't been this low since 1977
by Corina Ciubotaru

Good news for the institution of marriage: divorce numbers are falling in Britain. They've reached their lowest point for the last 30 years, and the divorce age has risen. This rise might be due to people's thinking that marriage is more serious than they once believed, but also to their trusting marriage therapy more than they used to. The average age for divorce in men has gone up to 43.3, while most women get divorced at 40.9. Last year, figures also showed a decrease in divorce numbers, and it was the smallest number in 5 years, so the trend seems to be here to stay. The most couples to divorce were in 1993, at 180,018 and now, the percent per 1000 people has reached 12.2 when it comes to provisional divorces. Most often, women are granted the divorce and the most common reason for a permanent break-up is character. They also say their men have become too controlling and they can't take it anymore. In 2000, the divorce rate was also the lowest in 20 years, with 144,600 marriages ending in 1999 and the new marriage number as low as it was in the 1920s. A reason might be that more people now are choosing to live together rather than have a formal wedding, and it might be the media's influence that gets them to think so. Recent celebrity divorces, still, have shown them that it's a messy and expensive business that affects the husbands and kids alike, sometimes leaving permanent scars.

London's Tube workers will be on strike for the next 3 days
by Corina Ciubotaru

The London tube will be somewhat crippled in the next few days by a strike following the collapse of Metronet, the company that made sure the metro lines and trains are in working order. The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has organized a three-day protest to ensure that there will be no negative side effects for the former workers of Metronet, and two more transport unions might join them in the action. These are The Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) and Unite, which together represent the interests of a few hundred Tube workers. During the strike, trains will function but there will be no maintenance crews available, so if anything gets broken, it will not be fixed in these 72 hours. The Mayor of London Mr. Ken Livingstone, along with the administrator of Metronet has tried to reassure the workers that no jobs or pensions would be lost but his words had little effect on the workers' morale, as they have decided the promises were not to be fully trusted. The strike will repeat next month if there still are problems, and this is not very good news for the millions of people that travel by train in London daily. The action will start at 6 P.M. on Monday and two-thirds of trains will not function for the next three days, so commuters are advised to switch to other forms of transport and consider walking. The second stoppage is scheduled to start on September 10th and last for another 72 hours.

Basra stands alone
by Claudia Sonea

For the first time after the American invasion in 2003, the second largest Iraqi city is without foreign troops and stands alone to front all the terrorist attacks. The British prime minister, Gordon Brown, said that although the British forces (around 500) have left the base, Basra Palace (around 11 p.m. local time on Sunday) they will still have an over watch role and they can intervene if necessary. According to the statement on his Web site that actually quotes the interview with BBC Radio the troop's number depends on how things will evolve. For the time been the British troops are stationed to the main command center inside the city to the Iraqi Army, says Gen. Mohan al-Fereiji, the commander of Iraqi forces in Basra. Despite the fact that there is no official timetable for the British withdrawal the number is expected to reduce from 5500 to 5000. The date period given by a Ministry of Defense was around autumn, depending on how things are settling and the security of Basra will be handed over to provincial Iraqi control. The public is criticizing the decision saying that the Mahdi Army militia led by Moktada al-Sadr and other Shiite religious militant groups can see it as an easy target. But the British officials say that the problem is criminal bands and not insurgents. Their presence is the one that actually draws the terrorist attacks and the local people agree to this statement. Expecting to see the results both British and Iraqi officials are careful to avoid the things that happened in other cities after the troops left them. Until further solutions are found!stay close and surf for more news!

Three year old Madeleine McCann has been gone for 124 days and counting
by Corina Ciubotaru

The saddest stories in the history of news involve children and animals. Whether they get abducted, killed or hurt, it's always the stories of the helpless that move us the most. Such is the case of Madeleine McCann, a three year old girl from Britain who went missing while she was in Portugal with her parents, Gerry and Kate. It's already been 124 days since nobody knows anything about what happened to her, where she was taken or when she will be brought back. The media in the U.K. and Portugal have told this story time and time again, without hesitating to make up their own stories and witnesses when the brute facts did not suffice. But it has only helped the sales of their newspapers, when they figured out that this story sells. It hasn't helped the police, or Madeleine, or her worried parents who are desperately waiting for an answer from the inexperienced policemen handling the investigation. Portugal has a policy of not releasing information on an investigation to the wider audience so they can't rely on the public for help or give reassurance to the parents. Instead, Gerry and Kate have launched their own campaign to popularize the kidnapping and make people aware that they can lend a hand. Celebrities like David Beckham have donated money to the couple to help the campaign, and now the two have a full-time PR manager that deals with the press and protects them from the ridiculous allegations of some papers. They try to stay optimistic and deal with the situation one day at a time, but having your child kidnapped is one of the worst things anyone can ever go through.
