Three year old Madeleine McCann has been gone for 124 days and counting
by Corina Ciubotaru
The saddest stories in the history of news involve children and animals. Whether they get abducted, killed or hurt, it's always the stories of the helpless that move us the most. Such is the case of Madeleine McCann, a three year old girl from Britain who went missing while she was in Portugal with her parents, Gerry and Kate. It's already been 124 days since nobody knows anything about what happened to her, where she was taken or when she will be brought back. The media in the U.K. and Portugal have told this story time and time again, without hesitating to make up their own stories and witnesses when the brute facts did not suffice. But it has only helped the sales of their newspapers, when they figured out that this story sells. It hasn't helped the police, or Madeleine, or her worried parents who are desperately waiting for an answer from the inexperienced policemen handling the investigation. Portugal has a policy of not releasing information on an investigation to the wider audience so they can't rely on the public for help or give reassurance to the parents. Instead, Gerry and Kate have launched their own campaign to popularize the kidnapping and make people aware that they can lend a hand. Celebrities like David Beckham have donated money to the couple to help the campaign, and now the two have a full-time PR manager that deals with the press and protects them from the ridiculous allegations of some papers. They try to stay optimistic and deal with the situation one day at a time, but having your child kidnapped is one of the worst things anyone can ever go through.
