Brown and his "bigoted" voters!?
by Barbora Misakova

The words can hurt, but what is worst, they can sometimes ruin everything. I can’t help myself, but when I heard about Gordon Brown’s words addressed to a woman he “was forced” to talk during his election campaign walkabout, I started to laugh. The 66-year-old woman who was confronting Brown on immigration and the economy was labeled by British Prime Minister as “a bigoted woman”. There is no surprise as she asked him how he would tackle the country’s record deficit, European immigration, pensions, university tuition fees and anti-social behavior. Poor Brown didn’t realize that his broadcast microphone is still on and so the w! hole world discovered what he really thinks of his potential voters, of course not all of them. ‘Bigoted’ are only those who are too annoying and those who just ask too much. Even though Brown apologized “profusely” it is still questioned if it helps him and his Labour Party’s campaign one week ahead of a general election. It is more likely the shame will overshadow opportunity to highlight his experience in handling the economy. What is more, Britain’s main problem is record budget deficit. As treasury spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable told Reuters, all the big parties already agreed that if they want to avoid Greek-style financial chaos, government needs to cut borrowing. Even though Labour Business Minister Peter Mandelson doesn’t think Britain is in similar situation as Greece, repairing the public finances will be the biggest domestic policy challenge. These problems will have to be fixed after the election as no! w parties don’t want to risk voter’s wrath by iden! tifying the extent of cuts.

by Milota Sidorova

by Milota Sidorova

Power Balance before U.K. elections.
by Milota Sidorova

Something unusual is happening in U.K. Right now. Major power balance switch among three biggest political parties – Labour party, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. And while the top position in the polls was led by David Cameron's Conservative party, this has changed during past weekend. And it's something Britain has never seen. The election underdog Liberal Democrats sharply improved the position, ending as a clear winner, if the election would happened these days. The first televised political debate with three leaders, current Prime Minister Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg finished more than good enough for Clegg on Thursday. He ove! rthrew his rivals and the proof was given by immediate poll results. A BPIX poll in Sunday issue of the Mail labeled Liberal Democrats a tight winners with 32 percent. Compared to the last week, the party got up 12 percent. Conservatives went down 7 percent down to 31 percent and Labour party lot 3 percent and finished at 28 percent. The sample of respondents consisted of 2,149 people surveyed over Friday and Saturday. Another YouGov poll gave Liberal Democrats plus 11 points over the week, getting 29 percent. This would be tight third place with Conservatives taking 33 percent (after going down 7 percent) and Labour party loosing 2 points to 30 percent. YouGov worked with 1,490 respondents over Friday and Saturday. If election took place these days, Labour would still get 276 seats in parliament, loosing 50 seats to majority, Conservatives would end up with 226 and Liberal Democrats on 119 seats, according BBC's seat calculator. If this would happened, there would be no way! for government consisting of one party. The coalition would b! e the so lution, but with balanced powers, each of the parties could be there.

One volcano able to halt the whole continent
by Milota Sidorova

There was something terribly beautiful in the air last five days. You walked down the streets and turned your head up to the sky and except of the clouds you could see nothing. Just blank sky, pure nature along with everything that nature meant. They said, the aviation traffic stopped for five days all over the continent and it was true – there was this huge sound of silence falling down on Earth. And yes, we have heard many businessmen lost billions, thousands of people got struck somewhere on this one point, one spot and were not able to carry on. The traffic stopped and the system got the first attack. One suddenly saw how fragile the whole human civilization was, ! one volcano could stopped well developed industry, hit markets and slow down the production.Imagine, that would happen for six months – what would we do? What kind of world would we face? What would be the right matter in this world? What would be the value.Yes, and while we Europeans got sick and angry because the life has stopped and returned to its safe mode, people on Iceland fight for their lives. The volcano erupting the dust has raised its activity. As we know, the clouds of stones, dust and sand is the first phase – then the volcano lowers down and prepares for the major eruption. So far, this has happened. This morning aviation companies forced politicians to open the sky, because the concentration of the dust declined. But this morning another message came from Iceland and Britain. The volcano is awake and erupting magma with another cloud rushing his way down to Europe. You know, once I saw awesome music video of Icelandic music group Sigur Ros. It was c! alled untitled 1 or Waka and everything in this video was cove! red with the grey dust. Children went outside after the school, they went to play their games, just to enjoy the air. But it seemed like a wasteland out there. The sky was grey and red, everything buried under the dust. One girl tumbled and lost her breathing mask. She fell, surprisingly took a deep breath and she died, lying in the dust.I thought that was brilliant picture of the future man was about to create. But now it seems so terribly close, that picture wasn't just a metaphor, it was a picture of the country hit by the eruption and volcano.Under governmental orders, Icelandic people have been evacuated since this morning. The dust is complicated everything – farmers are afraid to leave their animals up to nature's mercy. They can't even go outside their houses. The air contains toxic gases and local people have to wear breathing masks. Everything under huge cover of grey, grey dust. Some says nature always wins. But we all have to understand it!

Jediný vulkán schopný zastaviť chod celého kontinentu
by Milota Sidorova

Aký znepokojivý vie byť, pokiaľ ustane a prekazí do hodiny nadiktovaný harmonogram. Jediný mrak by dokázal zruinovať ekonomiky mnohých krajín.Čo by sa stalo, ak by islandský vulkán ostal činný ešte pol roka? Takisto my ľudia sme málo empatickí – zatiaľ čo my Európania v relatívnom bezpečí nadávame na zrušené spoje, Islanďania začínajú zápasiť o vlastné životy. Prach a výpary zastavili väčšinu ľudskej aktivity. My všetci ťaháme za kratší koniec.

People power will rule Britain if Tories win
by Zivka Deleva

It seems like Britain’s Conservatives are very eager to take over the government in the country on the May 6. The campaign of the British biggest opposition provokes for the people to think it through whether to give more support the Labour party after 13 years of sovereign. If elected, Conservative leader David Cameron promises to change the whole system and what is very important, to create “Big society” in which every single British human being is going to be relevant and will have a role in solving the country’s problems. OK, this seems to me a little bit too optimistic, or maybe a better word to express the feeling would be – utopian! It i! s not like I am defending some side, I really don’t care about the political parties in Great Britain, but I am very familiar to such speeches and nice words, because they are some universal political code. Every society needs a change, from time to time, some new wind to blow and bring new ideas and ideals. Cameron reminded himself to President John F. Kennedy’s famous inauguration speech back in 1961 - “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Cameron promoted a Tory manifesto in London in front of his sympathizers. He calls them to be more responsible for their own lives and communities from the state. One of the manifesto efforts would be to let people to veto local government tax increases and trigger referendums no matter on what issue, if they have five per cent of the population’s support. This sound good! According to a poll for The Times, it seems like the difference between the Tories a! nd Labours are not so big anymore, and Conservatives go down f! or 36 po ints, Labours are up for 33 and Liberal Democrats have status quo position with 21 points. Till the day of the big decision, three weeks from now, we shell listen to more and more silver-tongued words, and we’ll see who is going to be the most convincible.

Gordon Brown and the future
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The general election in the UK are approaching, onlz three and a half weeks remain, and so British prime Minister Gordon Brown revealed his party´s election manifesto. Former chancellor of the exchequer during Tonz Blair´s time as Prime Minister uses the word future as the key word these days and tries to convince UK voters to leave the past behind and look ahead. "A few days ago someone asked where does New Labour stand? What business are we in - past or future? Our answer is as clear as the question was then. We are in the future business," said Gordon Brown. One of The United Kingdom‘ s biggest concerns right now is budget deficit which is about 167 bill! ion pounds (190 billion euros), however, the Prime Minister is very keen on to talk about that. Well, nobody in his place would, it is impossible that kind of money. "We are talking about phenomenal amounts per household. We are talking about borrowing 1.2 million pounds every day since the birth of Jesus," says Conservative shadow defence secretary Liam Fox. "That is what the amount of debt we now have is. This is something that is saddled on the next generation." The Labour election manifesto also promises not to raise the basic rates of the income tax for the duration of the next government. Gordon Brown announced the manifesto at Birmingham hospital and described it as ''ambitious but affordable, bold but realistic''. Naturally, the Labour party plans to help the recovery as much as possible and also to create about one million new jobs. Moreover, Green Investment Bank should be established controlling about two billion pounds in assets and having the access to billio! ns more from the private sector. The money should be used for ! boosting green energy industry and transport development.

Bomb explosion in Northern Ireland
by Barbora Misakova

When lawmakers approved the transfer of policy and justice administration from London to Belfast, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it is “final end” of decades of strife. The explosion of car bomb on Monday proved the exact opposite. A car bomb has exploded near the headquarters of Britain’s MI5 domestic security agency in Northern Ireland. As a police spokeswoman said: “A device has exploded in a vehicle at the rear of Palace Barracks in Holywood.” Barracks houses hundreds of employees of the Security Service or MI5 what is the United Kingdom’s counter-intelligence and security agency. Nobody was seriously hurt in the blast, but ! taking into account the time of the explosion, the bomb was not meant to kill. The time of explosion was symbolic – just few minutes after the devolved power-sharing administration in Belfast resumed control for the first time in 38 years. When in 1972 Britain seized control from Ireland’s local ministers because of violence known as “The Troubles”, devolved administration fell promptly and more than 3,500 people died in the conflict. Power-sharing transfer should had been a sign of peace between Catholics who are longing for the independent Republic of Ireland and Protestants who wanted to stay within the United Kingdom. Even though the main paramilitary groups have laid down their arms, sporadic violence still appears. Just last year two British soldiers and a policeman were killed. Latest bomb attack was condemned by local lawmaker Naomi Long, deputy leader of the cross-party Alliance party, who said: “I would utterly condemn any such attac! k and am sure that the vast majority of people from across our! communi ty are sickened by the actions of people who seem intent on dragging Northern Ireland back into the past.”

Brits have one month to choose the new government
by Zivka Deleva

The Laborites are going to try to get the fourth mandate and lead United Kingdom. The election date has been set on 6 May, as the actual Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced today. Road to recovery - that’s how the Brown called the new campaign of its party. The public has waited for the date of the general elections for some time, and the right time came after the Prime Minister met the Queen few days ago. If elected, he promised to have a “clear and straightforward mandate” to go on with his work of economic recovery for one of the worst hit countries in the world. He promised politics that is more transparent and accountable. "We will not allow 13 year! s of investment and reform in our public services, to build up the future of these great services, to be put at risk" – said Gordon. Everybody knows how boring campaigns are and how big hearts and mouths politicians have when it comes to promising things, just to get few votes more. So the leaders of the biggest British parties didn’t wait a second to visit the potential voters the same day the date was announced. The greatest rival of the Labor Party seems to be the Conservative Party of the leader David Cameron. He, on the other hand, pledges the electorate that he is going to bring “fresh start” for the country. "It's the most important general election for a generation. It comes down to this. You don't have to put up with another five years of Gordon Brown." – said Cameron. And, if using different words means different things, the leader of the third biggest UK’s party, the Liberal Democrats – Nick Clegg want to give to the p! eople “real change”. The May 6 is very near. We s! hall see who is going to be the more convenient of all.
