Brown and his "bigoted" voters!?
by Barbora Misakova
The words can hurt, but what is worst, they can sometimes ruin everything. I can’t help myself, but when I heard about Gordon Brown’s words addressed to a woman he “was forced” to talk during his election campaign walkabout, I started to laugh. The 66-year-old woman who was confronting Brown on immigration and the economy was labeled by British Prime Minister as “a bigoted woman”. There is no surprise as she asked him how he would tackle the country’s record deficit, European immigration, pensions, university tuition fees and anti-social behavior. Poor Brown didn’t realize that his broadcast microphone is still on and so the w! hole world discovered what he really thinks of his potential voters, of course not all of them. ‘Bigoted’ are only those who are too annoying and those who just ask too much. Even though Brown apologized “profusely” it is still questioned if it helps him and his Labour Party’s campaign one week ahead of a general election. It is more likely the shame will overshadow opportunity to highlight his experience in handling the economy. What is more, Britain’s main problem is record budget deficit. As treasury spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable told Reuters, all the big parties already agreed that if they want to avoid Greek-style financial chaos, government needs to cut borrowing. Even though Labour Business Minister Peter Mandelson doesn’t think Britain is in similar situation as Greece, repairing the public finances will be the biggest domestic policy challenge. These problems will have to be fixed after the election as no! w parties don’t want to risk voter’s wrath by iden! tifying the extent of cuts.
