Britain 'could lose security council seat'
by Delia Cruceru
Lord Malloch Brown, the new Foreign Office Minister, suggested Britain to hand over the seat at the UN Security Council to the European Union. According to a report from EU Observer he said the EU was gradually heading towards one seat within the UN organisations. "I think it will go in stages. We are going to see a growing spread of it, institution by institution. It is not going to happen with a flash and bang," Lord Brown said. But Conservatives are not very happy about his affirmations, William Hague the Shadow Foreign Secretary, said: "It is alarming that Gordon Brown has chosen to put in charge of UN reform the man who thinks we should give up our UN Security Council seat to the EU." "The new Treaty, like the old, could automatically let the EU foreign minister speak for Britain at the UN Security Council in certain situations. This is clearly the thin end of the wedge for an EU take-over of our UN seat." Although the Government has tried to delete a clause that allowed the EU to speak at the Security Council on some matters, it failed. The comments were made by Lord Brown during a visit to diplomats in Brussels last year, before he became a member of the Government. He caused a controversy when he suggested that Britain and US would no longer be "joined at the hip"
