British Airways strike enters second day
by Magdalena Rosova

Cabin crew of British Airways entered the second day of a four-day strike on Sunday. The srike caused travel disruption and initiated increasingly political dispute. 12,000 British Airways cabin crew, who are part of the Unite trade union, say they are likely to srike until British Airlines makes an acceptable offer for them. Opposition Conservative leader David Cameron used the strike to accuse Prime Minister Gordon Brown, because his Labour party receives much of funding from Unite trade union. The fact that it is just few weeks before an election in Great Britain made the strike political matter. Cameron said that Brown was weak to deal with the strike and he was th! reatened because he was hocked to the money from the unions. According to Cameron the unions scented government's weakness and therefore so many strikes are taking place in Britain. Brown protected himself saying that in the past 13 years of the Labour government there had been more peace that there had been in the times of Conservative rule. For Brown British Airways strike makes no sense as it is not good for public, nor British Airways of workers. But he wanted to give strikers chance for negotiation. Unite, the largest trade union in Britain, said the dispute with British Airlines would continue until both sides come to a sensible agreement. British Airways cabin crew strikes because of the the company's strategy to cut costs. But British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh says that the airline needs to adapt to the changes in the industry and new economic conditions. Welsh claims that without changes British Airways had no chance to survive in future.

British Airways štrajkuje už druhý deň
by Magdalena Rosova

Zamestnanci britskej leteckej spoločnosti British Airways začali v nedeľu druhý deň štrajku. Štrajk spôsobil vážny dopravný kolaps v krajine a navyše vyvolal debatu medzi politikmi. 12 tisíc zamestnancov spoločnosti British Airways, ktorí sú súčasťou odborovej organizácie Unite trade union, chce v štrajku pokračovať do vtedy, kým im British Airways neponúkne prijateľnú dohodu.

Psychology of European voter before 2010 elections.
by Milota Sidorova

Greece is not the only one country dealing with incredibly high deficit. Saving modes have been adopted in Portugal, Czech republic and it seems almost every European country has to deal with this fact. The danger of such step is increased by the fact that most of the countries face upcoming elections taking place from May to November. That's why politicians have to think twice. Finally! Pushing up saving cuts can be contra-productive in the eyes of the public. Although many people agree that economies have to think smart and decrease debts, many people also think that savings seldom meet the target due bureaucracy, corruption or financial fraud of strong interest groups. T! his way public opinion may be reluctant when it comes to increasing tax or creating new tax and fees. After the crisis the consequences still remain among people – the unemployment is still high and small and medium size business companies have no background to compete international corporations that is many cases ended up with better business profits in last three months.Literally, people don't see relevant and meaningful results in exchange for paying more. This situation is extremely strange and dangerous when it comes to political scene. As history shows, these times were easiest for nationalist and extremist groups to take place in governments, parliaments and another governing institutions. Right away we can see the evidence – some so called “labor” or “public” parties got into European parliament. There will be probably ultranationalist government elected in Hungary and many other member states. These parties take advantage from fro! m public need and suffer and offer irrational and quick soluti! ons to m ost of the problems and very often they are based on discrimination propaganda. This may be dangerous – a lot of countries face elections. The change may come. But as well as politicians, so we, citizens have to be cautious.

BA: Think twice before you act!
by Barbora Misakova

Think twice before you act. That should the establishment of British Airways do before they decided to save some money at the expense of its employees. That could save not only their money but also fair reputation. Now they have to face even bigger troubles they expected. After failed negotiations between British Airways and the Unite union – which represents its 12,000 cabin crew – the largest airline in the UK has to count with another strike. The first, three-day strike ended on Monday and cost British Airways over 10 million dollars a day. Over the first two days of the strike, the airline ran 78 percent of its long-haul flights and 50 percent of its short-h! aul flights. But it is not over yet. Another, this time four-day strike is starting next Saturday. Downgrading employees’ pay and perks packages wasn’t worth it as these protests can cost airlines more than 63 million of GBP. That is even more what should have been saved by these restrictions. While airlines’ employees are worrying about their financial means and other advantages, British Airways and Prime Minister Gordon Brown worry about threatening Easter holiday plans. There is also Britain’s global reputation that is threatened. Conservatives have accused the government of a limp response to the strike, but as spokesman for Brown said: “The prime minister has always been conscious throughout this period that the people who really suffer are the customers.” And it is really them who wish this problem to be solved as soon as possible.

Changing BBC
by Barbora Misakova

The British Broadcasting Corporation, what is the largest broadcasting network in the world, announced Tuesday it will close two radio stations and cut 25 percent of its online content what should free up millions of pounds. As BBC is a public service broadcaster the question if is it an economical or political move seems entirely apropos to me. Criticism of BBC’s market dominance lead to cancellation of two digital radio stations BBC Asian Network and BBC 6 Music which will close from next year at the earliest. Also spending on its sprawling online services should be cut. By 2013 half website pages will be closed. These changes should free up an extra 600 million pou! nds which are more needed to boost program funding. As director general Mark Thompson admits: “This is a step change. It’s saying the BBC can’t do everything; it needs to concentrate its investment on the services and the programs that make the most difference to audiences. And that does mean some sacrifices.” Rapidly changing technology and markets forced also such a giant as BBC to think twice. “We have got a lot of problems for commercial media, and the BBC’s got to think more carefully about how it fits in with media elsewhere.” said Thompson. While BBC talks about “putting quality first”, Union Bectu sees only hundreds of jobs that will be lost. “These cuts are totally unnecessary and are purely politically motivated.” said Gerry Morrissey of broadcasting workers’ union Bectu. As Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw expressed the BBC’s future would be safer under the ruling Labour Party, but BBC &#! 8220;should not approach the future assuming the Conservatives! , who ar e viscerally hostile to the BBC, will win the election.”
